Betting without putting yourself at risk

Sports betting is gambling: you can lose what you stake, and sometimes more than you expected. This page does not lecture. It gives reference points and useful numbers.

For adults only (18+).

Sports betting involves a risk of financial loss. For adults only. No content, tool or analysis published on Prono Data guarantees a win. A funded account does not remove the risk: the challenge fee is lost if you fail, and drawdown rules can end the account at any time.

The risks, concretely

  • Financial loss: the stake is lost on every losing bet. Over time, the operator's margin works against the bettor. Even a serious strategy goes through long losing streaks.
  • Addiction: sports betting is among the forms of gambling most associated with problem gambling, especially among young adults. The shift from a hobby to a dependency is gradual and often invisible to the person concerned.
  • Indirect consequences: debt, family tensions, isolation, anxiety, sleep disorders, professional difficulties.

Warning signs

A single one of these signs deserves attention. Several justify talking to someone.

  • You bet more money or more often than you had planned.
  • You bet again to recover a loss ("chasing").
  • You hide your bets or their amount from people close to you.
  • You borrow, use an overdraft or credit to bet.
  • You think about betting while doing something else, or you neglect work, studies, sleep.
  • You feel irritable or anxious when you cannot bet.
  • You have already tried to stop or cut back, without success.

Six simple rules

They do not make gambling profitable. They keep it in its place: a hobby, with a cost you have chosen.

A budget set in advance

Decide on an amount you can lose without consequence on your daily life, and never exceed it. Once it is gone, you stop.

Limited time

Set betting time slots and stick to them. Betting should not take over your evenings, your nights or your working time.

Never chase losses

A loss is final. Re-staking to make up for it is the most common mechanism of the downward spiral. Losing streaks are part of the game, even with a sound method.

Never on credit

No loans, no overdraft, no money meant for rent or bills. If the money is not available, the answer is no.

No betting under emotion

Fatigue, anger, alcohol, euphoria after a win: all states in which decisions deteriorate. Postpone.

Technical limits

Use the deposit, stake and time caps offered by operators, and the temporary self-exclusion options if you feel the need.

Help resources

Free, confidential, without judgement. For you or for someone close to you. These services are based in France; if you are elsewhere, contact your local gambling helpline.

Joueurs Info Service

French national helpline: listening, information and referral, 7 days a week, 8 am to 2 am. Anonymous call at standard rate. Chat and a directory of care providers are available on the website.

Evalujeu

Free and anonymous self-assessment test of your gambling habits, offered by the French gambling regulator (Autorité nationale des jeux, ANJ), with personalised advice based on the result.

Voluntary gambling ban (ANJ)

Official French scheme that lets you ban yourself from gambling (casinos, licensed online operators) for a minimum of three years, on simple request.

What our tools do not do

The stake calculator, the bet journal and the analyses published on this site are meant to structure a practice and make it readable. They do not predict a result, do not turn a loss into a win and guarantee nothing. If you use a tool to justify staking more, it is time to take a break.

Funded-account comparisons describe paid products. The price of a challenge is an expense, not an investment, and the challenge target is not reached by every participant. We publish no success rate until it is sourced.
